Community Projects

The Junior League of Greenville, Inc. (JLG) has positively impacted the Greenville community since its inception in 1929. Its mission is to develop the potential of women and improve the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers.

The JLG is a training organization that helps to develop the potential of its members as well as other women in the community.  The JLG offers its Members extensive training in areas such as leadership and organizational development, community needs assessment, strategic planning, communications, advocacy, and fundraising. We empower women, encouraging each other to take risks and develop new skills in areas of interest.  Two ways JLG provides these opportunities is through Lunch and Learns offered throughout the year and its annual LEAD Day.  JLG has been improving the Greenville community over the last 75 years.  In February 2007, JLG sponsored a Child Watch 2007 with United Way Success By 6 and First Steps of Greenville County to help the community become educated about the child care situation in our area and outline efforts to improve quality early childhood care and education programs in the County.

Some projects that are improving the community this year are Kids In The KitchenA Nearly New You, Home Run for Healthy Kids, Junior Volunteers and Done in a Day

Kids in the Kitchen (KITK) is a program intended to target and prevent childhood obesity in the Greater Greenville area by reaching out to and sharing knowledge with children and parents.  KITK utilizes education, hands on learning and fun to equip children and parents with the tools to
make healthy lifestyle choices and reduce childhood obesity.  KITK's Education Committee has developed age-specific curricula and activities in order to carry out its twelve (12) educational agency events.  KITK's Events Committee, together with partners from the fitness and healthy
lifestyle fields, will plan and hold approximately twelve (12) special events.  KITK MISSION:  To raise awareness of childhood obesity and attempt to reverse the growth of childhood obesity and associated health problems.  To educate children and families about nutrition and healthy lifestyle choices.

"A Nearly New You” is a project that will make a visible, concrete impact in our community and will happen on our own doorstep.  “A Nearly New You” will hold several special events through the year in collaboration with the Nearly New Shop, for women and children from various agencies. These events will give well-deserving women and children a fresh start and a new beginning by providing them with goods and services available through the JLG and NNS.

Junior Volunteers is a new committee in which JLG promotes volunteerism among youth in the community.  The mission of The Junior Volunteer committee is to partner with organizations that provide access to area youth to create opportunities for volunteer projects conducted by the youth and facilitated by JLG members.  The Junior Volunteer committee collaborates with local agencies and establishments to match volunteer services with the needs of the community in various capacities.  As an end result, the JLG wants to teach young people the importance and value of volunteering in the community to better the lives of others as well as themselves.

Done in a Day (DIAD), formerly Community Impact, is entering our 3rd year!  Our mission is to combine the needs of community agencies for trained volunteers with the desire of JLG members for volunteer options that expose them to a wide variety of agencies in the Greenville community.  DIAD focuses on 1-2 day events with shift times between 3-4 hours/shift.  Last year, we partnered with 20 different agencies on more than 60 events, providing over 1550 volunteer hours!

During the 2009-2010 League year, the Junior League of Greenville, Inc.’s Active and Provisional members provided 26,000 volunteer hours to the Greenville community.  Based on the 2008 value of the volunteer hour ($16.26), this equates to a total of $422,760 given directly back to the community. Each Active and Provisional Member of JLG has a Placement which is their volunteer work through JLG.
