JLG Award Honorees

Jillian Furey – Provisional of the Year, Andrea Simrell – Active of the Year and Heather Hooks – Sustainer of the year.

Provisional of the Year: Jillian Furey

Jillian Furey earned Provisional of the Year after a year that tested her commitment in incredible ways. During her provisional year, she planned a wedding from out of state, got married, and welcomed a newborn. Jillian more than tripled the League’s 24-hour Nearly New Shop requirement, logging over 70 hours, while staying active in Council and League events throughout the year. Having moved to Greenville knowing almost no one, Jillian joined the League in search of community and a meaningful way to give back, and she brought a positive, inclusive spirit that quickly made others feel welcome. Her enthusiasm and heart reflect the best of what the League hopes to find in its newest members.

Active Member of the Year: Andrea Simrell

Andrea Simrell was named Active Member of the Year in recognition of 18 years of dedicated service to the JLG. Andrea has contributed across all aspects of the organization, bringing the ability to see the big picture, understanding how each piece fits into the League’s broader mission. Her willingness to invest fully in the work, as both a problem solver and a collaborative team player, reflects the highest standards of active membership.

Sustainer of the Year: Heather Hooks

Heather Hooks, a JLG member since 2009, received the Sustainer of the Year award for her strategic vision and long-standing commitment to the League’s future. Heather has served on the Board of Directors three times, guiding the organization through periods of growth and change with a thoughtful, goals-oriented approach. Her collaborative spirit and sustained engagement continue to strengthen JLG’s foundation and inspire members across the organization.

Each year the Junior League of Greenville presents three Membership Awards recognizing outstanding service and dedication to our League and community for that League year. Nominations are accepted in the Spring, and the awards are presented at the May GMM.

Our Active of the Year Award is named after Helen Horton Hunt. Helen Horton Hunt was a Member of the Junior League of Greenville for 10 years before her tragic death in 1989. She was an outstanding volunteer – pleasant, positive, responsible, and thorough. Her Placements included Provisional Development Committee, Child Advocacy Committee, New Born Care at the Greenville Hospital, and the Placement Committee. When she died, the JLG commissioned an artist to sculpt a statue of a child, which now stands in the wing of the Children’s Hospital. The 1988-89 Nominating Committee created the Helen Horton Hunt Service Award to recognize a Member with outstanding volunteer service, serving above and beyond her Placement Requirements and demonstrating voluntarism at its best.

The Provisional of the Year award is named after Frances Pearce Steele. No one has ever loved the Nearly New Shop as much as Fran. She served as its Chairman in 1991 and broke all previous sales records. As a hands on Chairman she worked tirelessly with all of the Provisional volunteers who at that time completely ran the shop without a paid staff. She served as a zoo docent, zoo summer camp counselor, a Provisional Advisor and a Member of the Training Team (now LEAD). However – her greatest achievement was the countless hours designing and executing all of the sets for the Carolina Creatures fundraiser. Fran spent months painting sets, back drops and even built a two story working volcano. It was joked that she was covered in paint for months following the exhibit. Because of her work in the Shop and beyond it was decided that the Provisional of the Year award should be named after her.
