It is a difficult time for our country. George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor are just the latest names representing inequity and injustice in our society.
The response to their deaths has brought forth awareness for social justice, but we have a long way to go.
The events that have taken place across the country over the past two weeks have left our leadership wrestling with the same emotions felt by so many: sad and heartbroken, troubled and angry. We hope the emotions we are feeling can be used as fuel to do what the Junior League has always done ― fight for a better Greenville for all citizens.
A key element of the Junior League of Greenville’s Mission is to improve the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. We seek to bring women together to fulfill our Mission and Vision, which is supported by our values and inclusion statement:
The Junior League of Greenville, Inc. is an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable.
The Junior League of Greenville, Inc. is committed to building a safe, healthy, nurturing community.
The Junior League of Greenville is guided by the following values:
COMMITMENT TO DIVERSITY & INCLUSION
The Junior League welcomes all women who value our Mission. We are committed to inclusive environments of diverse individuals, organizations and communities.
To that end, our Mission and commitment to diversity, inclusion and equity will guide us. We will continue to partner with organizations that are working to empower marginalized communities and to eliminate inequities.
The JLG has identified the need to address its struggle with diversity and inclusion (D&I). Last year, we developed a D&I task force that served as a starting point for our D&I Committee. This year, the League’s inaugural Diversity & Inclusion Committee will be working to provide education to League Members. Additionally, the Committee will partner with the Recruitment Committee to try to ensure diversity in our next Provisional group. They will work alongside other JLG Committees to ensure equity and inclusion throughout our organization. Finally, the Committee will work with our Strategic Planner to infuse diversity and inclusion into our strategic plan.
Making a significant and lasting change will take a commitment from all of us. The JLG is a Member of The Association of Junior Leagues International, Inc. (AJLI), and one of the benefits of this partnership is the collaboration, collective work and resources from AJLI and all Member Leagues. AJLI is working to “ensur[e] that we have clear steps that every League, every member can take.” We will work to share and implement these resources and communicate our actions.
Although we are all distanced physically during this pandemic, we stand together in spirit. We hear and acknowledge the pain so many are experiencing, and we grieve along with you.
The JLG strives to be a force for good in our community, identifying common ground where we can stand together and begin to change and heal.
